Finding Doceo was undoubtedly a highlight of my year, as it accelerated the start of my professional journey. Funnily enough, I discovered them after being sent a TikTok video about their EmpowerED programme in August. I applied blindly, not knowing that I would be one of the lucky 50 individuals selected for the programme. It included a two-day work experience programme with a choice between a law or tech stream—I chose tech.
The tech programme was hosted at IBM, where I had the opportunity to engage with a diverse panel. One key skill I gained was understanding the sheer importance of networking. Without it, I wouldn’t have come across the programme in the first place. As a young Black girl, it was incredibly inspiring to see older women who look like me excelling in the world of STEM. Aspiring to pursue a career in aeronautics, this eye-opening programme helped me visualise myself in that role and realise that it is indeed attainable.
Going into the Doceo programmes, I felt the need to improve my interpersonal skills—whether it was communicating my ideas effectively or building professional relationships. The experience also taught me the value of LinkedIn, as I connected with many individuals from the programmes while also forming meaningful friendships.
I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to participate in activities with Doceo, and I would encourage others to do so as well. There will always be more opportunities, take advantage of them!
